Catawba County Permitting Office 76 North Center Street Hickory, NC 28603 RE: Lutheran Home West 2140 Medical Park Drive, Hickory, NC Dear Mr. Rogers: i We apologize for the delay in response to the last few comments to the above referenced project. Y The P P j project was put on temporary hold by the Owner last year and we have been awaiting approval to proceed since then. Happily the time has come and we are anxiously moving forward. We are resubmitting an entire set for your review with all changes clouded. Some of the changes you will find were done as a cost saving measure and are not a direct response to the comments referenced below. I would be happy to discuss them with you at you convenience if you wish. We offer the following responses to review comments by Mr. James Lamb dated 10/26/2010, regarding the above - referenced project. 1. A written response to the comments in the order they appear in this correspondence as well as appropriate clouded revisions to the plans shall be provided. Response: None Required. 2. Sheet G004: Page 1 and page 2 of the Statement of Special Inspections are required to be complete for the plan review process. Due to a procedural change within the plan review department the Statement of Special Inspections is now required to be on 8.5 X I1 sheets submitted with the construction documents although unattached. Response: The Statement of Special Inspections is attached to this letter. The Contractor's information and the Geotechnical Engineer's information have been provided, however the Owner has not yet selected a Testing Agency. Once the Owner has engaged a testing agency we will provide the Special Inspections Engineer of Record. We understand that this will be required prior to issuance of a building permit. 3. Per North Carolina Department of Insurance Interpretation oversize toilet paper dispensers in the accessible stalls is not acceptable. The dispenserplacement between 19" and 36" results in a toiletpaper height that is not within the reach ranges. The dispenser placement interferes with the clear use of the grab bar. The width of the dispenser interferes with the clear floor area required at the water closet in the area between the water closet and the grab bar. Response: Revised drawing sheet A602 shows the proper code compliant toilet tissue dispenser. 4. Provide vertical grab bars for the water closets to comply with Section 604.5 of the ICC /ANSI A117.1 -2003 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. Response: Revised drawing sheet A602 shows the addition of the required vertical grab bar. 5. Verb compliance with Section 1107.5.2 of the 2009 NC Building Code. Designate which units are "Accessible" units and which units are "Type B" units. Provide details of each. October 10, 2011 Page 2 f Response: As a skilled nursing facility with no independent or assisted living, all resident units are designed as "Accessible ". 6. The minimum width between handrails shall be 96 inches per Section 1017.2, exception #6 of the 2009 NC Building Code. Response: Handrails are provided at all egress paths which are all 8' -0" wide corridors. 7. Provide a letter from the building owner that this facility will fall under the exceptions listed in article E 517 -40A of the 2008 NEC. The essential electrical system as shown on the plans does not comply Article 517.41 of the 2008 NEC. Response: See copy of requested letter from Owner attached. i Sincerely, RPA Design, P.C.
