F Dear Mr. Clark: This letter is in response to your fax dated 4/20111 (attachment 'A") r acuestinry a code interpretation for the above mentioned project. With that fax were tyw) non-scale copies of piopcssed floor plans °? You had two questions: • 1) Can you place a 3 -hour fire- resiMence -•ated door wrath 3 -hour rated giaring in an e;.ist :ng 3 -hour fire- resistance4ated fire wa0 2) Does the addition of doers across a rated coridor tc divide 'he corridor into separate sect fns need to he 20 minute fire resistance - rated? i i My conclusions are: 1) Table 715.4 of the 2009 NC Building Code (NCBC) indicates that a 3 -hour door is acceptable in a 3 -hour Fire wall. Section 715.5 - F1re- Protectlor -Rated Gtazi. ^5 indicates that compliance with Sect on 795.4.5 is required for the glazing. Section 715.4.6.1 - Size Limitations indicates ii Exception #1 that "Fire - F7h.t6ctior -rated gla7irxg i r, Are doors l ocated in fire walls S hari be prohiNted except 'hat v ihere. serving as a '7orizoiafal exit, a se,Yclasiny swixirg door .shat! be , :yen. niltcd tv have P vision panet o` lint . ore than 100 cquars inches without a rlirrension exceeding 10 inches" Only such doors t ^at are used as a horizontal exit: as described in Section , '022 Tray have glazing and then the size is fmited to In0 s;uare inches. 2 The cote does not indicate a requirement for a rated door in a .%rrri jor %vhere t ie rloor i- usec' ar ly to 7 - subdivide the corridor into sections.
