Construction documents for the Hickory Career & Art Magnet School - renovations project were received on
March 24, 2011. The following architectural review comments are submitted to the designer and the Hickory City
Schools for consideration in accordance with G.S. 11 5C-521. Comments by other disciplines, if any, will be
forwarded under separate cover. A Certificate of Review will be issued after plan review has been completed.
The drawings were dated 3/14/2011 and marked "Construction Documents." The project manual indicates bids
are scheduled for April 21, 2011. Response to these review comments is required to complete the review
process.
1, G 001 List of Designers shows Civil as NA, but there are civil drawings.
2. CS 100 Delete this sheet (I think it is leftover from an earlier phase). It is incomplete, and the Vicinity
Map shows incorrect street names,
3. C 100 Symbols in Erosion Control Legend cannot be seen.
4. C 200 Is fencing required? If so, where -- at LOC (sheet C100)? Is there a designated area for
Contractors material storage area, trailers, jobsite office?
5, drafting Generally, existing construction to be removed is shown with dashed lines, and existing / to
remain is shown with a light / solid line. Showning existing / to remain with a dotted line is
confusing.
6. A001 Detail 2, Coordinate "Block Width" with dimension shown. Coordinate wall types with
designations shown on plans. [In details, Types MIA, M1B, MIC, M2A, M2B etc., but plans
show M1, M2, etc,]
* 7. A002 Door Elevations: show dimensions and type of glass. Door Schedule, show fire rating if required
8. A101 Notes: on the drawings, it is difficult to tell if notes are General Plan Notes, Demolition Key
Notes, General Finish Notes, or General Ceiling Notes.

9, A101 Plan Area A: 9 you leave the glass windows in place, they WILL get broken. Why have an
enclosed space between the existing exteriorwall and the new wall? Close these window
openings now. OR... There is no visual security into the enclosed access walkway to the new
HC lift Consider removing existing windows, creating a cased opening; terminate new wall at
appropriate height, install "floor' at window sill, so that observation into this area is possible from
the existing corridor. (New interior wall is no longer bearing, so structure would have to be
changed.]
TO, A101 Re: new knee wall at new HC lift in existing stair -- it would W helpful to have an elevation or
section through this wall. What is the exising base on the other end of the stairs? New base is
called as RB1.
11. A102 Show slab depression for cooler. Show exhaust hood and diswasher exhaust in reflected ceiling
plan: Provide Roof Plan showing penetrations, and details. Coordinate with FS sheets, See
comment 12. Confirm: is there enough room between ceiling and roof structure to
accommodate ductwork in area of exhaust hood? See mechanical plan 3/M101.
12. Food Please clarify: FS drawings are noted "for information only," and FS is not referenced in project
Service manual, summary of work, etc. Is FS equipment to be furnished by Owner, installed after Final
Completion? If installed concurrently with this Work, you should inform the contractor of that
13, A102 Cosmetology area: will manicure services be included? If so, be aware that requirements for
exhaust and supply air are critical.
14. A102 -3 General note on A103 makes contractor responsible to comply with ANSI A117,01. It would be
better to show & schedule grab bars. (See sheet A106)
* 15. A106 Toilet Accessories: an additional vertical grab bar is now required.
16. A104 Why is there a "new safety shower' in the Criminal Justice room? It does not show up on the
plumbing drawings. Please coordinate.
* 17. A104 What grade levels will use the Science room? What subjects will be taught there? Will any
chemicals be stored / used? (This is critical -- please respond a.s.a.p.) Is casework in the
Science room the same as in the Criminal Justice room? If so, please note.
18. A105 Add dimensions to locate new walls. Why use 8" emu as screen wall in toilets, and as plumbing
chase wall? Masonry walls would be a better choice than gyp board in the Shop / Production
Room.
19. A106 Women's Toilet [031]: do not construct a chase made of toilet partition; increase width of toilet
stalls if necessary, Detail 2: where is this "cut?"
20, A301 Roof -edge details: showing a single hash line through the blocking indicates that it is not
continuous. Two lines indicates continuous blocking, You will want at least the top piece, the
bottom piece, and the outer (vertical) piece to be continuous.
21. A301 Sections 1 & 2: show, note, or specify brackets to secure downspouts.
