Dear Mr. Battiste:
Atlantic Geoscience & Engineering, PC (AGE) appreciates the opportunity to evaluate the conditions for
the retaining wall at the subject property. Our authonraton is your verbal request.
At the time of our visit on August 13, 2008, we observed the location for the proposed retaining wall.
We understand that the wall will he approximately 103 feet long with a 90 bend approximately 50 feet
from the end. We understand the watt will be composed of 8 inch block with brick veneer facing, The
majority of the wall Is less than three feet in height; however, a 23 foot section is 5 feet 4 inches high.
Where the wall supports between 4 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 6 inches of unbalanced fill, we recommend
the footing extend 2 feet behind the block Ifor a total width of about 3 feet) an the backfflted side of
the wait to help provide cantilever action. We recommend adding #4 transverse steel and vertical
dowels at 16 inches on center in this section. Where the unbalanced fill is between 4 feet and 4 feet 6
inches, the footing projection can be reduced to 18 inches and the vertical site( 5pachhg can be
increased to 32 inches.
Note: Compact barkfill to a density consistent with at least 95% of soil's standard proctor maximum
dry density in order that they can develop its internal friction capacity.
