At your request, i visit was made to the referenced address on October 23, 2008, to
consult with you regarding a Concern mentioned by your Ccurlty building inspector
pertaining to the lower level columns and their adequacy to supper t e gravity loads

At the time of ti is site visit, these M columns were found to be composed of
pressure treated southern yellow pine #2 grade material. The columns were fcund to
range from approxmiately 9 te? 8 feet tall, and diagonal braces were installed on must
of the columns
The loads applied to these columns were calculated, and it was detan33ined that all of
the columns exce, ?t the second column from the left are structurally adequate in their
current conditions to support the gravity loads specified by the North Carolina
Residontial Code, 2006 Edition, based on material properties listed in the American
Forest and Paper F,ssociaticn's National Design Specification, 2005 Edition. To retrofit
the second column from the left, the existing diagona braces may be utilized to reduce
the effective length of this column. To accomplish this, one 518' diameter galvanized
threaded rod should be installed to secure each pair of braces to the column. Please
ensure that a 2" r'iinimum edge distance is maintained when instahing these rods.
