The inspection was conducted on March 4, 2008 in support of an evaluation to determine structural integrity of two 1-joists which had been cut to provide access for electrical wires. The damaged joists are both located in the garage ceiling at the back right comer as referenced walking into the garage. The 1-joists are directly off the wall between the house and the garage. The joists have a hole cut into the web that measures approximately 4.5" x 24" and is approximately six (6') feet off the end of the joist. All the joists in the garage ceiling are 14" 360 TA joist spaced at 16" on center. We evaluated two (2) scenarios for the damaged joist. The first evaluation considered the damaged joist to be completely inactive and assumed the remaining joists were spaced across the ceiling at 24" on center. This analysis indicated the joist would be adequate to support the loading however, there could be a small amount of vibration to the floor in this case. Based on the location of the joist and the proximity of the joist to the wall (6" off the wall), it is highly unlikely there would be any additional vibration of the floor in this case as the remaining joist across the floor are actually spaced at 16" on center. The second analysis simply evaluated the joist for shear across the cut section. The hole removed approximately 53% of the web material at the cut section. The actual shear loading at the cut is approximately 280lbs. The allowable shear load at the cut based on a reduced section is a total of 485lbs. The moment load is carried through by the undamaged flanges and there fore is not a concern in the analysis. Based on this evaluation the damaged 1-joists remain adequate to support the loading and will perform their intended function.
