The alternate supporting arrangement was suggested in an attempt to maintain symmetry of the deck and shed roof support system around the perimeter of the house. The shed roof extends approximately eight (8') feet off the side of the house above the garage and cantilevered deck. As the deck is cantilevered approximately four (4') feet beyond the main support girder, there must be a means to support the load from the shed roof without impacting the cantilevered deck. The new support arrangement consists of two (2) main support columns which will bear directly on the cantilevered deck band. The columns will consist of PT 8x8 posts which will be notched and bolted to the deck band. The cantilever deck will be supported down to the masonry columns below with PT 8x8 knee braces attached to the masonry columns will ' /." steel brackets. The knee braces will be attached at the cantilevered deck band with another '/" steel plate and through bolted. The original roof system called for the roof support post to extend up directly above the knee brace attachment points. The new symmetrical arrangement removes two support posts. The analysis was then run on the shed roof band with the new spans and also on the cantilevered deck band. The deck band was the critical case as that band must support the roof point loads as well as the tributary design loading on the deck. Within the new arrangement, the left roof support post (as seen facing the garage) will drop down and be supported close to mid -span between two knee braces. The right roof support post will be very close to lining up with a knee brace on the right side. Based on this arrangement and in consideration of the design loads, the new support system is adequate and will provide the necessary support for the roof and the deck. We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with this assessment. If you should have any questions, please feel free to call at any time. Sincerely, 2!91 A. Hardsoq P.E, G.C.
