Mr. Sloan traveled to the site at the request of the client to evaluate the subgrade for tha
previously excavated continuous foundations of an addition to an existing home. Mr, George
Noetling was on site and stated that the Catawba County Building Services had recently rejected
the subgrade and recommended that the evaluation be conducted.

the subgrade be over -excavated to one foot below the existing level at all locations. The concrete
tooting should be constructed to bear at this new level. Also, the footing width should be verified
to maintain the required minimum of 16 inches.
In
that the work be conducted during dry weather conditions to keep the new subgrado dry for
concrete placement. Otherwise, should the new subgrade be subjected to wet conditions, it
should be re-evaluated.
