The nitrification trenches shall not exceed a width of 3 ft and a depth as determined by the LSS. This is a gravel less chamber system therefore there is a 25% reduction in the drain field size. The minimum backfill over lines shall be 6 inches. Trenches shall be placed a minimum of 9 ft on centers. A 3-foot earth dam shall separate the fields and the pressure manifold. The finished grade over the nitrification field shall be landscaped to prevent the ponding of surface water; and runoff of surface water shall be diverted away from the nitrification field. 2840 Cbrene Lane O/J.ciie Septic System 1 October 18.2022 ('atenrha County.North Carolina CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE: The Contractor shall install all components of the system in strict accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. Upon completion of the system construction, the Contractor shall charge the system with water and go through a complete cycle as described herein. Any failure or discrepancy shall be corrected. The manufacturer of the component and the contractor shall warrant the component and system for one year from the date of acceptance by the owner. Lay out the entire system including septic tank, pump tank, supply line, pressure manifold, and nitrification lines. Establish elevations to ensure continuity of all components of the system. Care shall be taken to ensure that a minimum amount of disturbing of the soil takes place in the nitrification field area. The terrain shall be graded to minimize any flow of surface water onto the nitrification field areas. Once the nitrification field and repair area are established, they shall be barricaded to prevent any vehicular traffic from passing over the area. No grading shall be allowed in these areas. Establish final grade around the septic tank, pump tank, and supply pipes before excavation for tanks or burying of the supply lines. Locate the septic tank and pump tank at such elevations to accept drainage from the building sewer. Access holes and covers shall be DEH approved as called for on the plan. The tank shall bear a manufacturer's serial number and be supplied by a manufacturer approved by DEH. The outlet tee of the tank shall have an effluent filter as specified on the plans. All precast tanks shall be tested for water tightness by an approved method such as 24-hour water tightness test with maximum allowable leakage not to exceed 1/2" drop in water level per 24 hours. The testing shall begin after the water level in the tank has stabilized. Any leaks shall be corrected and the tanks re-tested. Testing using a vacuum shall be 5 in/Hg for 2 minutes. Carefully backfill supply pipe trenches to finish grade with clean (debris free)earth (no stone). Leave absorption area with a raked surface, ready for seeding by General Contractor. The details of pump installation are shown on the plan. A stainless-steel lift chain shall be attached to the pump for lifting the pump in and out of the chamber. (The PVC outlet pipe is too fragile to support the pump.) The chain shall be anchored to the tank riser. The pump outlet pipe shall be connected to the force main with a threaded PVC union (or dresser coupling)to allow quick removal of the pump without entering the pump tank. The union shall be within 18"of the riser lid. A ball valve is to be installed in the force main (within the pump chamber) to allow final adjustment of the pressure from above the tank. A 3/16" anti-siphon hole shall be drilled in the supply line immediately downstream from the pump. Pump on-off water level control switch shall be mechanical switch rated for the intended use. Cord length shall be of length to reach the control panel mounted near the pump tank (no splicing is permitted within the tank chamber). Switches shall be provided with non-corrosive straps, brackets, and weights as necessary to allow placement and operation of the float to prevent entanglement. Switches required are: "redundant off-switch (float)", "pump enabling switch(float)",and an "alarm switch (float)." The redundant off-switch (float) should be set to ensure the pump is always covered with effluent. The pump enabler switch (float) should be set to activate when there is one dose volume. The alarm switch (float)shall be set to activate within 12 inches of the pump enabler switch(float). Float controls shall be suspended from a float tree consisting of a 1.5" PVC pipe anchored in a concrete block. This pipe shall extend to a height 6 inches above the high-water lever. Floats shall be attached to 2"SCH 40 PVC pipe, which shall slide over top of 1.5" pipe. This pipe shall extend to within 18" of two of riser so that operator can reach in case of malfunction or float adjustment. See float tree as detailed on the plan. The floats shall have properly positioned weights. Install pin through both pipes above water level to prevent tree from"floating."As an alternate, floats may be hung from a stainless-steel float bracket located within 18 inches of tank lid. The pump and high-water alarm must be placed on separate electrical circuit breakers. (If the pump circuit fails, the alarm must still be able to operate.) Follow the manufacturers'recommendations for the proper fuses or circuit breakers. All electrical connections must be made outside the pumping chamber inside the NEMA 4X control panel. FLOAT ADJUSTMENT: After all components have been installed and connected, the system shall be checked for proper operation. The check shall be performed in the presence of the Design Engineer, 2840 Cirene Lrote OINte Septic SJtaent 5 October 18.2022 Catawba County,Noah Carolina representative of DEH, systems operator, and owner. With electrical power turned off, fill the pumping chamber with water until the liquid rises to the level of the high-water alarm float. Turn on the electrical power. The alarm light and horn should activate, and the pump should start operating. The alarm will go off when the liquid level falls below the high-water alarm float level and the pump will go off when the liquid level falls below the pump enabler float. Wiring between the pumping chamber and the electric panel board shall meet State and local code requirements. Conductors shall be conveyed in 1-1/2" conduit or as called for with seal off. One for power cord and one for float control cords. CONTROL PANEL OPERATION: If the water level continues to rise enough to engage the "Alarm", the audiovisual alarm shall activate and remain latched until the silence switch is pressed. When the silence switch is pressed, the audible alarm shall be silenced, and the top mounted alarm light will remain lit until the water level drops below the"Alarm"float,at which time the alarm circuit must be manually reset. The panel shall be permanently mounted a minimum of 36" above the ground near the tank to ensure no splicing of pump power leads or float control leads between the control box and the pump or floats. 2" diameter conduit with vapor seals shall run from the pump tank to the panel. PRESSURE HEAD ADJUSTMENT: With the pump running and all air out of the supply line and manifold, a temporary 'IA" diameter by 2' long clear plastic pipe or test tube shall be connected to the test port on the pressure manifold and the effluent allowed to rise in the test tube, The valve at the head of the manifold should be adjusted to cause the effluent to stabilize at 2' above the pressure manifold. The pressure head is then correctly set. Turn off the pump, remove the test tube and plug the test port. All valves leading from the manifold to the nitrification lines shall be left in the open position. These valves will be used only if it is determined that certain nitrification lines should be deleted from the system later. After the system is installed, the following should be checked to ensure that the system would not be overloaded with excess rainwater and run off: ■ The distribution field is shaped to shed rainwater and is free of low area. • All tank access lids shall be inspected for watertight construction, diversion of surface water and secured but readily accessible to all the chambers. • The effluent pump shall be checked for proper operation and ease of removal for service or replacement. All metal that may corrode shall be painted with "asphalt"type paint. " Effluent filter shall be accessible and easily removed for servicing. Installation of the system shall be performed under the supervisor of the Local Health Department. VIII. CERTIFICATION: The Contractor shall employ the Design Engineer to make timely observations of the project during construction.Upon completion of the project, the Contractor shall provide the Engineer and/or the Local Health Department an"as built"plan of the project. The Engineer shall certify that the project has been constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications and shall further certify that the various apparatuses including fixtures within the house meet the intent of the specifications. A copy of the"as-built" plan (completed by the contractor)and certification shall be provided to the County Sanitarian. The system shall not be operated until the Project Engineer certifies in writing that the system has been installed in accordance with the approved plans and specifications, and the installation is approved by the local Health Department. If a float is found to be faulty, either during the annual inspection or during troubleshooting after an alarm condition, see the section below titled Removing and Replacing Inoperative Floats. Removing and Replacing Inoperative Floats Important: Before doing any work either on the wiring to the level control floats and pump in the vault or in the pump control panel, switch the circuit breakers in the panel to their "OFF"positions;then switch off the power to the system at the service entrance panel. 1. Remove the float assembly from the vault. 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the stainless steel screws from the splice box lid, being careful not to drop the screws into the tank. If the splice box was submerged, or if there is a crack in the conduit, there may be water in the splice box.If this is the case, remove water from the splice box with a syringe, sponge, or other appropriate method. Loosen the cord grip at the splice box and verify the appropriate splice for the float. Unscrew the wire nuts and remove the float. 3. Remove the inoperative float and replace it with a new one. Push the float cable through the watertight cord grip into the electrical splice box. Leave an adequate length of electrical cord coiled inside the riser to allow for easy removal of the float assembly. Do not remove the colored markers or the paper tags from the float cords, and do not try to thread the markers and tag through the cord grip.Tighten the cord grip by hand, not by tool, then test the tightness of the cord grip by tugging on the cord.A cord is secure when the cord grip is tight enough to prevent slippage. An adequate length of cord should be left within the splice box to allow for easy removal for future disconnecting and resplicing. 4. Refer to document EIN-SB-SB-1 for instructions to splice the float wire to the wire from the control panel.Attach the float wires using the waterproof wire nuts. It is necessary to replace this wire nut with a new watertight wire nut. Always use watertight wire nuts or heat shrink splice kits for all connections! 5. Replace the float and collar and return the assembly to the pump vault. 6. Reconnect power and test the unit. NIN-MF-MF-1 ©2003 Orenco Systems'Inc. Inspect your order for completeness and inspect each component for shipment 97479-9012 damage. If something is missing or damaged, you will need to contact your supplier to obtain replacements. TELEPHONE 3. Check to be sure the instructions and items supplied comply with state and local 1541)459.4449 regulations. 4. A qualified electrician must be employed to install and service the panel and ancillary FACSIMILE: wiring. The equipment must be installed in compliance with the National Electric Code, (541)459-2884 as well as state and local codes. Placement of the Control Panel 5. Install the electrical control or alarm panel within view of the tank. The panel should be attached to a post or an exterior wall. Panels that contain motor contactors make a thumping sound, each time a pump is started or stopped. Therefore, these panels should not be mounted to an exterior wall unless it is in a location away from living areas, such as on a garage wall. If possible, position the panel in the shade to protect it from weather. Extreme temperatures can cause inconsistent performance of the electrical components. Locate the panel at a convenient height(usually about five feet above the ground)and where it will be accessible for maintenance. Install Floats and Pumps 6. Install the electrical splice box(es) for the floats and pump(s)before installing the actual floats and pumping equipment. The splice box(es)are installed in the grommet(s) provided near the top of the riser. 7. Install the floats. Thread the float and pump cords through the cord grips into the PVC splice box, leaving adequate lengths of electrical cord coiled inside the riser to allow easy removal of the pump and float assembly. Do not remove the colored markers or the paper tags from the float cords, and do not try to thread the markers and tag through the cord grip. These should be left on the float cord, outside the splice box. Tighten the cord grips, using hand pressure or a wrench if necessary, until the cord will no longer move in the cord grip. If the cord grips are not tight enough, the seal will not be watertight, but overtightening may damage the cord or the cord grip,so use only as much force as necessary.Adequate lengths of cord should be left within the splice box to allow for easy removal for future disconnecting and re-splicing. 8. Run the wires from the control panel to the splice box. The wires can be brought through a conduit,or can be buried using suitable direct-burial wire. Conduit that enters the splice box must be sealed, even if the wires are direct-buried,to prevent the infiltration of water into the splice box. Use an electrically approved sealant to plug the wires coming in through the conduit hub.The number of wires required depends on the control panel and the number of floats and pumps used. This can be determined by consulting the Float Arrangement diagram appropriate for the control panel and float arrangement being used. EIN-CP-GEN-1 Rev 2.0©01/10/05 Page 1 Wire should be sized at 14 AWG for the floats. Refer to Figure 1 to determine the proper size for the pump wires. When calculating wire size, the length and size of the branch circuit wires from the service entrance panel to the pump control panel must also be taken into account. Wire that's too small can cause an excessive voltage drop and poor pump performance. Wires should be color coded or otherwise marked to aid in wiring the control panel. Drawing EIN-SB-SB-1 lists recommended colors for each of the wires. Colors may refer to either the color of the wire's insulation, the color of a tag,or the color of an electrical tape marker. 9. All splices made in the splice box should use waterproof wire nuts or butt connectors and heat shrink tubing. The splices must be waterproofl Splices that are not waterproof may cause a malfunction of the pump controls if water should leak into the splice box. Refer to Drawing EIN-SB-SB-1 for instructions on making waterproof splices. Refer to the appropriate Float Arrangement diagram for instructions on how to connect the floats together. Connect Control Panel 10. Connect the wires coming from floats to the terminals in the control panel. Refer to the appropriate Float Arrangement diagram for the correct terminal connections. 11. Connect the wires coming from the pump(s)to the pump terminals. Refer to the panel wiring diagram for the correct terminal connections. 12. Connect the incoming power to the panel. Power to the panel must be appropriate to the control panel and pump motor(i.e. 120VAC, single phase for a 120 VAC motor, 240 VAC single phase for a 240 VAC motor, etc.) Insure that the panel is properly grounded and that the fuse or breaker and wire size, from the main power panel and to the pump, are sized correctly. Separate circuits for the pump controls and each of the pump motors is recommended. Note: Voltage for the controls in the panel is always 120VAC,although the pump voltage may be 120VAC or 240 VAC. 13. Use 60°minimum CU conductors only. Torque the terminal blocks to 15 LB-IN and the ground lugs to 45 LB-IN. Torque the circuit breakers to 20 LB-IN for 14-10 AWG wire,25 LB-IN for 8 AWG wire, and 27 LB-IN for 6-4 AWG wire. 14. When power is applied to the control panel, the wires to the pump may be energized. Do not service the pump or any electrical wiring in the pump vault without disconnecting the power at the circuit breaker and the fuse. The pump vault area is a hazardous area, and may contain explosive gases. Take appropriate precautions before working in the pump vault. 15.
