Dear Jeffery,
This letter is confirm that the concrete masonry units that will be used on the above mentioned project
for 2 hr walls will comply with the building code.
1. Table 720.1(2) Rated Fire - Resistance Periods for Various Wall and Partitions lists Concrete
Masonry Units (Expanded clay, shale or slate require a minimum finished thickness face to face
of 3.6" for a two hour rating.
2. Based upon the test data from Froehling & Robertson, Inc. and submitted by the manufacturer,
the equivalent thickness for 8' CMU is 3.84 ".
3. Based upon the test data from Froehling & Robertson, Inc. and submitted by the manufacturer,
the equivalent thickness for 12" CMU is 5.84 ".
4. The block that has been submitted and is on the site is the expanded clay, shale or slate type
I hope this address the concerns about the rating of the block that is on the job site. Please let me know
if you have any additional questions or comments. Thank you for your continued assistance with this
project.
Sincerely,
J. Steven Walker, AIA
