Thank you for your review and your staffs' review of this project on July 23, 2010. Enclosed with this
response letter is 7 sets of the revised architectural drawings. Demolition is scheduled to start
tomorrow, July 27
In response to the comments I have the following:
1) All items have been responded to.
2) For further code official requirements please contact me or Ernie Sills, AIA, LEED AP
3) All provisions of the technical codes, pertinent laws and ordinances will be complied with.
4) See specifications for testing laboratory requirements.
5) Provisions have been made to keep students and staff away from the construction area and the
students and staff will not start using the new facility until a certificate of occupancy is obtained.
6) Interior finishes will comply with table 803.5. see notes on sheet A2.0.
7) Adequacy of egress lighting and exit signage will be verified in the field.
8) Fireblocking and Draftstoping will be installed as necessary.
9) The existing toilet rooms and locker rooms will not be renovated as part of this project.
10) There will not be any indirect waste piping on this project.
11) See attached "Special Inspection Documents ".
12) Addendum items have been incorporated into the 24" x 36 ", see attached revised Architectural,
Civil, Structural, Mechanical & Electrical sheets.
13) The ramp has been coordinated with the civil sheet C2, see attached.
14) The note regarding the existing entry canopy to remain has been added to sheet AD1.0 for clarity.
15) The door schedule on sheet A2.0 has been revised to show doors 203A & 204A as rated doors.

16) A note has been added to the plan on sheet A1.0 at the boiler room indicating that the filled in wall
will be 2 hour rated.
17) The detail key for section G on A6.1 has been deleted and detail key E has been correctly referenced
to sheet A6.1
18) See attached copy of an e-mail from Rick Sain with the Catawba County Schools stating that the
owner will provide the required listening devices.
19) Shop drawings of the bleachers will be submitted to your office as soon as they are available.
20) An overflow drain has been shown for the new mechanical room and the adjacent entry roof, see
revised sheet A4.0.
21) Roof drains over the main space have been revised to show (4) 4" primary roof drains and (4) 4"
overflow drains, see attached roof drainage calculations.
22) Refer to the revised sheet A4.0 that shows the overflow drain over the coaches' office.
23) Details for the entry canopy cover have been incorporated into sheet A6.1, see wall section E and
the notes as well as the structural details that show the fastener type, diameter, length and spacing.
The notes that were submitted previously have been shown on the details. A letter from the
manufacturer on their letter head regarding snow & wind load conformance is attached. A copy of
the shop drawings will be submitted to the permitting center for your review when they come to
our office.
24) See revised structural sheets that eliminates the bridging to the 2hr wall next to the locker rooms
and revises the bearing plate on the other wall.
In response to the previous comments from the Catawba County Fire Approval I have the following:

ROOF DRAINAGE CALCULATIONS
FOR THE ARNDT MIDDLE SCHOOL GYMNASIUM ADDITION
July 27, 2010
As requested by the Catawba County permit plan review of July 22, 2010 item no.21 the roof
drainagecalculation is as follows:
1— Per figure 1106.1 100 -year, 1 -hour rainfall (inches /hour) for primary roof drains, Catawba
County is 3.5 inches per hour. Per table 1106.2 size of vertical conductors and leaders a 4"
drain for a 4" per hour rainfall will serve an area of 4,600 sq. ft. of horizontally projected roof
area.
2 — PER FIGURE 1106.1(a) 100 -year , 15- minute rainfall (inches /hour) for secondary roof drains,
Catawba County is 6.8 inches per hour. Per table 1106.2 a 4" drain for a 7" per hour rainfall will
serve an area of 2,630 sq, ft. of horizontally projected roof area. Extrapolated 6.8" per hour
from table 1106.2 the area served by a 4" drain will be 2,718 sq. ft.
Main Gymnasium roof area is: 10,411 sq. ft. divided by 4 = 2,602.75 sq. ft. (4) drains required & (4)
provided for secondary drainage. 10,411 sq. ft. divided by 3 = 3,470 sq. ft. (3) drains required & (4)
drains provided for primary drainage.
Boiler Room /Storage Room roof area is 1,302 sq. ft. (1) primary & secondary drain required & provided.
Coaches Office is 267 sq. ft. (1) primary & secondary drain required & provided.
Entry Roof is 116 sq. ft. (1) primary & secondary drain required & provided.
1 —The area permitted for a 4" horizontal storm pipe @ 1% slope for a 4" per hour rainfall is
1,800 sq. ft. for primary drainage & 1,108 sq. ft. for secondary drainage at 6.8" per hour.
