So I have attached the last 2 pages of water levels in the drain field after the last 2 major rains in case you need this info before someone comes out to the house. As you can see it seems to be lines 1,2 and 3 where the largest amount of water gets in and keeps getting in even after it stops raining. I hope this helps. Also I would really like to be here when you go through the process. I will be out of town from 6/9 through 6/17. Hopefully you can work around that. Thanks, Rick Brown Original Message From: Mike Cash <MikeCash(cCatawbaCountyNC.clov> To: 'Rick Brown' <broceaaol.com> Sent: Wed, May 25, 2016 1:43 pm Subject: RE: rain and tank The folks who actually process our applications (Julia and Katherine) are great resources for helping you through this process. You can contact them at (828) 465-8270. If you don't mind the trip to our offices, it is sometimes easier to have someone right there to ask questions, etc. and certainly helpful if you are unfamiliar with the process. As I said, they are very helpful in that regard. So what do we need to do at this point to submit an application for a repair permit? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated since this is all new to us. Where do we get the forms to start this? Is there any one besides you that we need to talk with to get started? Thanks in advance for your help with this. Rick Brown Original Message From: Mike Cash <MikeCash(a.CatawbaCountyNC.gov> To: 'Rick Brown' <brocea@aol.com> Cc: 'Mckinney, Alan H' <alan.mckinney a,dhhs.nc.gov> Sent: Wed, May 25, 2016 11:06 am Subject: RE: rain and tank 1 Rick, After some thought, I feel that the best way forward with this will be in response to a repair permit application, as is our normal process. I have seen no visual evidence to date that suggests to me that your system is "failing" by definition, so I cannot require a repair at this time, but we can certainly address your concerns by proposing a repair option. That means you will have to submit an application which begins the evaluation process and a site evaluation will follow as required. There really is no reason to revisit the site otherwise, unless I can observe an actual system malfunction. The most sensible options appear to be some type of surface water/groundwater diversion, providing that is even possible, or an expansion of the system to increase its storage capacity. I still believe the final landscaping on that site has a great deal to do with your issues, but I am not sure how to even approach that. Regardless, we will need the appropriate application before we can permit anything, and a permit will be necessary to move forward. I can schedule our state regional specialist to return to the site if you wish, once we have received an application. As far as arranging for the original installers to come out, it will be up to you to get them there if that is what you want. I have no authority to require them to do that. Let me know how you want to proceed. Regards, Mike Michael E. After the last 3/4 of an inch Sat night all but 1 of the lines filled up in a couple of hours. The other line half filled up. With the view ports it is very obvious where the water is getting in. I know some water is going to seep into the lines with rain but not fill them up in a few hours. As a result every time this happens we can not do laundry or take showers until the water goes down for fear of flooding the tank again. I know you are not sure how to add more capacity to the current system to hold more water. But I want to seriously consider ways to keep the water out of the system, especially now that we can tell which lines are getting the water. On top of all of this it takes 2 to 3 weeks for the water to drain out of the lines because it has no where to go. And this time of the year we do not always get that much time before the next rain. 2 Please set up a time you can come by to visit with us again about this. I would also like for you to bring the original installers with you to get their input now that the view ports are in and I have data on all of the lines. We would also like the state guy that came over before to be part of the discussion if at all possible. Water in drainlines is not a septic malfunction. I would suggest monitoring the water levels each day for about a week from this rain event to see where it goes. If it goes down (as it should barring any more rain events) then the system is doing what it is supposed to do. The daily records will show us the general rate at which it moves out of the system. If it continues to back up into the plumbing, I will want to see that. If we are to proceed with a repair option, I will need an application for a repair permit to proceed to an evaluation. That would be the time to contact the original installers, if you wish, but that will be your call. All 5 lines now have water in them. Lines 1 and 2 are full at 6 and 1/2 inches. Line 3 keeps going up and is now at 8 inches ( the highest it has been). You can actually hear water flowing into line 4 from line 3. 4 and 5 are both at 2 and 1/2 inches. 5 is holding steady and 4 is still rising with line 3. Should I try to get you and the original installers here together to go over options and what needs to be permitted and done? If so let me know the best way to get all of you here at the same time. Rick Original Message From: Mike Cash <MikeCash(a.CatawbaCountvNC.gov> To: 'Rick Brown' <brocea(c?aol.com> Sent: Tue, May 3, 2016 10:12 am Subject: RE: rain and tank Rick, Rainwater is always going to infiltrate into septic system drainlines, since it is an open system. That in itself is not a reason to suspect a malfunction, however, the degree to which it infiltrates, and more importantly the rate in which it exfiltrates is what we need to watch. When the water entering the system fails to dissipate into the soil at a sufficient rate that it causes a backup, then it is time to consider options. As we have discussed before, there are two main courses of action to consider here. If the topography does not allow for water to shed from the site properly, it will tend to stack up in the drainlines and we need to look at some drainage options. The other course would be to consider spreading out the system or adding to the system size (more drain lines) so as to allow for more water absorption during these rain events. Either way, we will have to start with an application/permitting process. You can involve the original installers as you choose, but we will ultimately have to decide what is permitted as a repair. Call me if you want to discuss any of this. 3 Mike How do things look after last night's rain? Michael E. We got 2 and 1/2 inches of rain Sat night. It was not enough to flood the tank but it did put water in the drain lines that was not there before as it did the last time we got that much rain. If we get another round of an inch or so I think it will flood the tank. I think it is time to figure out a fix now that we know for sure rain water is getting into the lines.
