Steve Dietz td Development Assistance Center i 76 North Center Street C-) Hickory, NC 28601 Re: Response to Plan Review Comments o o Case No: 10-09-1978 Hickory Housing Authority F Dear Mr. Dietz, Pursuant to our telephone conversation, this letter is to state that the construction type of the subject property is Type V•B, unsprinklered and that there will be no new construction to the project for the Hickory Housing Authority other then the addition of sloping roofs built on top of existing flat roofs at the front entrance porch. The existing porch roofs are self supporting by an existing cantilever system from the second floor framing. Since no additional support is structurally needed for the majority of the porch roofs, the primary purpose of the columns indicated in the drawings is that of a decorative nature. However, there has been some evidence of localized rot uncovered during past work at this site at a couple of the porch roof locations. During this work we felt that some additional support was needed, so columns where added. The drawings indicate columns to be added throughout only to provide a uniform look to the entire property. j The expansion anchors at the column base indicated in the drawings is a "belt and suspenders„ conservative approach to any additional uplift that may occur since the roof profile has been altered by the new sloping roof. Our calculations show that the weight of the concrete pad at the front porch and the allowable tension values of the four expansion bolts per column, 600 psi (without Special Inspections), are more than adequate to resist uplift at the porches. Also, the windows being replaced in this project are being installed in the existing openings without any change to the rough openings. The existing window openings meet code requirements for secondary means of egress from a sleeping room as required by 2009 NCBC 1026.1, 1026.2 and 1026.3. 615 East Broad Avenue Phone: 910-8956874 Rockingham, N.C, 28379 www.StognerArchitecturne-com Fax: 910-895-1111 10/29/2009 11:35 FAX 910 895 1111 STOGNER ARCHITECTURE 1002 5 I Stogner Architecture, PA ARCHITECTURE .
